Varicocele

Dilation of Veins Draining Testes

Overview

Varicoceles is the dilation of veins draining the testicles and is more common on the left side. In some conditions, it is also considered the cause of infertility. Varicoceles can cause testicles to shrink or not develop in a normal way. This happens over time and is easy to diagnose. It can be repaired through a surgical procedure using laparoscopic technique.

Symptoms

Varicocele does not cause any signs or symptoms normally. It can rarely cause pain which can result in:

Sharp to Dull Discomfort

Extreme Pain Standing

Impared Fertility

Feeling Bag of Worms in Scrotum

Causes

Spermatic cord holds up each testicle which contains the veins that send blood from testicles back to the body. During this backflip is prevented through valves. If there is back flow it causes veins to dilate.

Diagnosis

Varicocele is usually diagnosed after a physical examination by your doctor but the following tests may be performed to identify the cause and treatment. These test may include:

Ultrasound

When to See a Doctor

Make an appointment right away if any worrisome symptoms appear.

Treatment

Most patients require surgery which can be performed through laparoscopic procedure. Normally a patient goes home on the same day without an overnight stay. Scarring is almost invisible and minimal pain killers are required after the treatment.

Risks, Complications & Preventions

There are no established risk factors for developing a varicocele. Complications might include shrinkage of affected testicle or infertility. Varicocele can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle.
