Hernia

Bulge in Abdomen

Overview

A hernia is a bulge in the abdomen or groin region that becomes prominent with coughing, straining, or while standing. A hernia is a mechanical defect that occurs due to weakness in the abdominal wall.

There are a variety of hernias such as epigastric hernia (upper abdominal), paraumbilical hernia (around the navel), inguinal hernia (in the groin), and incisional hernia (site of previous surgery scar).

Normally hernias are not life-threatening and don’t go away on their own. Mostly a surgery is required to prevent any complications.

Symptoms

Small hernias don’t show any major signs or symptoms. However, larger hernias might cause:

Diagnosis

Abdominal Ultrasound

CT Scan

MRI Scan

When to See a Doctor

Make an appointment right away if any worrisome symptoms appear.

Treatment

Most patients with hernia don’t experience any pain or symptoms and might not need a treatment, but if a hernia is growing and causing pain, a surgeon may choose to operate.

In most cases, a surgeon will use Laparoscopic Procedure to treat hernia. During the surgery, a surgeon inserts special surgical tools along with a camera by making several small incisions in the abdomen area to view images inside a body and perform the operation.

All hernias are not suitable for laparoscopic surgery. Your surgeon will determine which type of surgical procedure is best depending on its condition.
