Overview
Testicular torsion is a condition in which the tissues around the testicle are not attached properly. This can result in the twisting of the spermatic cord which cuts off the blood supply to the testicle.
It often causes pain and swelling and requires emergency surgery. It can occur at any age but is most common during puberty.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of Testicular torsion are:
Intense Pain in Scrotum
Swelling of Scrotum
Change in Scrotum Colour
Nausea
Vomiting
Urination Problems
Causes
Testicular torsion can be caused by:
- Vigorous Exercise
- Minor Testical Injury
- Rapid Growth of Testicle at Time of Puberty
- Family History
Diagnosis
Other than regular physical examination, a doctor may require to perform some tests to determine the best way of treatment. The tests may include:
Ultrasound
Urine Test
When to See a Doctor
Make an appointment right away if any worrisome symptoms appear.
Treatment
Testicular torsion is considered to be a medical emergency and surgery must be performed right away to prevent the testicular tissue from dying.
Orchiopexy is done by making a small cut in the scrotum to untwist the spermatic cord and restore the blood supply. Sometimes one or both testicles are stitched to the inside of the scrotum to prevent torsion in the future. Delayed surgery may result in the removal of the testicle.
Surgeons at Curadors have successfully performed several such procedures over a period of 15 years. Our partnered facility, Maroof International Hospital has state-of-the-art operation theaters equipped with the world’s most advanced equipment to provide the best quality treatment to our patients.
Risks, Complications & Preventions
Testicular Torsion can permanently damage testicles if not treated timely. This will require surgical removal which can affect a male’s fertility. After the treatment, the patient may need to take painkillers and avoid exercising for a few weeks.
