Treatment
Treatment for stomach cancer will depend on its stage, location, and patient’s overall health. Usually, surgery is the mainstay of the treatment. If the cancer is at an early stage and only found in the inner lining of the stomach, endoscopy can be performed to remove small tumors.
Subtotal gastrectomy or total gastrectomy will be done if cancer cells have spread any further. These procedures involve removing the affected part of the entire stomach along with its surrounding healthy tissue to remove cancer. Some lymph nodes may also be removed initially for laboratory testing. Another surgery will be required for their complete removal if they too are affected by cancer. This is later followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy to kill the remaining cancer cells.
