Overview
Disc herniation is a condition in which the discs bulge out between vertebrae causing pain and pressure on the nearby nerve. This is the first stage of disc degeneration. It can occur in any part of the spine but is most common in the lower back.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of disc herniation are:
Numbness
Tingling in Affected Area
Pain in Lower Back, Arm, or Leg
Weakness
Causes
Disc herniation can be caused due to:
- Obesity
- Excessive Strain
- Injury
- Twisting Movement
Diagnosis
Other than the regular physical checkup a doctor may advise one or more than one of the following tests to determine the cause and treatment. Tests can include:
X-Ray
MRI
CT Scan
Myelogram
Nerve Tests
When to See a Doctor
Make an appointment right away if any worrisome symptoms appear.
Treatment
Disc herniation and disc degeneration disease can be treated with the help of anti-inflammatory medicines and physical therapy. Surgery is only advised if conservative treatments remain ineffective. It is performed by using the latest laparoscopic technique which involves making a small incision over the area of the herniated disc. The protruding portion of the disc is removed and a metal piece is placed inside the spine to provide stability.
Risks, Complications & Preventions
Some discomfort and pain are usually experienced by the patients after the surgery. Daily activities can slowly be resumed with the help of physical therapy and prescribed pain medication. Regular follow-ups with the doctor, exercising, keeping a good posture, and maintaining a healthy weight can all contribute to preventing any further complications.
