Overview
Rectal Prolapse is a condition in which the rectum protrudes out of the anus. Rectum is the last part of the intestine. It can become prominent over time due to pelvic floor muscles weakness. It can also be aggravated by multiple pregnancies, heavy lifting, chronic cough or constipation.
Symptoms
Symptoms for rectal prolapse may include:
Lump Outside Anus During Passing of Stool
Coughing
Sneezing
Bleeding
Mucus Discharge
Incontinence
Causes
Exact cause of rectal prolapse is unknown, but most common causes can be:
- Chronic Constipation
- Weak Pelvic Floor Muscle
- Heavy Lifting
- Chronic Cough or Constipation
- Multiple Pregnancies
Diagnosis
In some conditions, a detailed evaluation is required to determine the cause of rectal prolapse other than the usual physical examination. The tests may include:
Proctoscopy/Colonoscopy

Treatment
Rectal prolapse won’t heal on its own and requires a surgical procedure. Treatment may include stool softeners and other medications.
Risks, Complications & Preventions
Rectal prolapse prevention is not always possible but risks can be reduced by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Taking a high fiber diet and drinking plenty of water are some helpful and preventive measures.
