Overview
Hydatid cyst is a condition in which cyst is formed due to infection caused by a parasite tapeworm (Echinococcus). It is transmitted to humans from animals. The parasite usually affects the liver but can also affect lungs, kidneys and brain.
Symptoms
A patient may be infected for years before they start showing any signs or symptoms. The symptoms appear once the cyst inside the liver grows to a level where it starts causing problems. A patient may experience one or more than one of the following symptoms:
Abdominal Pain
Fever
Jaundice
Causes
A tapeworm enters a host body through animals such as dogs, sheep or a goat and causes infection. A patient is more likely to contract the infection when contaminated food is consumed (with animal feces).
Diagnosis
Other than regular physical checkup, a doctor might perform the following tests to determine the best way of treatment. The tests can include:
Blood Tests
CT Scan
Ultrasound
X-Ray
MRI
When to See a Doctor
Make an appointment right away if any worrisome symptoms appear.
Treatment
A minor trauma can cause the cyst to rupture and immediate surgical procedure is required. The most effective and easiest way to treat a hydatid cyst is laparoscopic procedure. Unfortunately, there are very few centre and surgeons who perform laparoscopic surgery for Hydatid Cyst in the world.
Early mobilization and quick recovery with minimal complications can be achieved through a Laparoscopic Procedure for Hydatid Cyst.
Risks, Complications & Preventions
Risks of contracting a tapeworm infection can include poor hygiene, exposure to livestock, and eating raw or undercooked meat. Tapeworms don’t usually cause complications but in some cases a patient can experience digestive blockage, brain and nervous system impairment and organ function disruption.
To prevent a tapeworm infection, one should always wash their hands before eating or handling food. Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly and avoid consuming undercooked meat. Provide timely treatment to livestock and domestic animals for tapeworms.
