Overview
Cubital tunnel syndrome is a condition which involves numbness, pain and weakness in hands and arms due to pressure on the ulnar nerve. It may happen if an individual frequently bends or leans over the elbows.
Symptoms
The following are the most common symptoms of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome:
Pain
Numbness
Tingling Feeling in Finger
Decreased Hand Grip
Causes
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome can be caused due to:
- Putting pressure on the elbow
- Elbow fracture
- Arthritis
Diagnosis
Other than the regular physical checkup a doctor may advise electromyography (nerve testing).
When to See a Doctor
Make an appointment right away if any worrisome symptoms appear.
- Sudden/Rapid Abdominal Pain
- High Fevers with Chills
- Yellow Skin and Eyes (Jaundice)
Treatment
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome can be treated by wearing a sling during sleeping and avoiding any sort of pressure on the elbow. Medication can be effective in reducing pain and swelling. Mild cases can also be cured by physical therapy. If the patient does not respond to non surgical treatment, surgery may be done to relieve the pressure on the nerve by shifting it to the front of the elbow.
Risks, Complications & Preventions
Numbness and tingling takes some time to improve after the surgery. A physical therapy program is advised by the doctor to facilitate the recovery process. It is advised to limit the elbow movement to prevent any further complications.
